Novigrad
A City to experience!
Novigrad is a small coastal town with approximately 4,500 inhabitants situated in the north-west of Istria, the Croatia’s largest peninsula. Known for its beauty, charming sea, excellent accommodation capacities and cultural events, Novigrad, through its numerous landmarks, offers its visitors the opportunity to discover its rich and interesting past.
In official written documents Novigrad appeared for the first time in the 7th century as Neapolis, and later in the 9th century with the name Civitas Nova. In the period from the 6th to the 7th century it was under the Byzantine rule and reached its peak as the seat of the Frankish Duke John in the 8th and 9th century. In the period until the 20th century it went from the German, Venetian, Napoleonic, and Austro-Hungarian to the Italian rule. Each of these periods left numerous marks worth discovering during the visit of this unique town. The Parish Church of SS. Pelagius and Maximus and its Romanesque crypt, the Ciborium of Bishop Mauricio, the display at the Novigrad’s Museum Lapidarium, St. Agatha’s Church, the old town walls, St. Anton’s Church, the Loggia Belvedere, the Patrician Rigo Palace, the Cistern, the Sarcophagus, the Biphora, are but a few of the sites, yet each with an interesting story to tell.
With its newly built first class marina, Novigrad is an attractive destination for nautical tourists; gourmands will be delighted to taste the specialities of the widely known Istrian cuisine; whereas those looking for a rich and varied cultural life, will find plenty of events to attend.
